Job Description
Tanager is seeking Gender Consultants to provide technical assistance and capacity strengthening to clients and partners. Role Overview
The consultants will focus on two primary areas: strengthening the gender capacity of clients' staff and focal points, and providing institutional support to enhance systems, structures, processes, and programs through a gender-integrated lens. This role involves both virtual and in-person engagement, coaching, and strategic policy development.
Key Responsibilities
Task 1: Gender Capacity Strengthening
Identify and select participants based on stakeholders’ mapping selection criteria.
Contribute to the development of activities and materials for training.
Co-facilitate and provide technical support during both virtual and in-person delivery phases.
Review participants’ exercises and deliverables during the virtual phase.
Provide mentoring and coaching, including technical support for individual and collective action plans.
Capture knowledge transfer and retention through pre- and post-tests and other feedback mechanisms.
Facilitate the client’s gender integration journey across domains including policy, strategy, culture, budgets, data, evidence, and 'Do No Harm' (guided by the IGNITE diagnostic domains).
Lead the development of Gender strategies and policies for clients.
Review and contribute to the development of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) tools, indicators, and frameworks.
Train enumerator teams in quantitative and participatory gender-focused data collection methods.
Provide feedback on research to help identify practical ways for programs to achieve gender impact.
Contribute to the development of learning briefs and participate in routine meetings with Tanager experts.
Deliverables
Detailed training reports, gender strategies, and policies as defined by specific scopes of work.
A monthly technical brief (maximum 2 pages) providing a summary of support provided during the month.
Required Qualifications
Master's/University degree with at least 8 years’ work experience OR a Bachelor’s degree with at least 12 years of work experience in Gender Studies, Development Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Women’s Studies, or a related discipline.
Minimum of 6 years' work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa in mainstreaming gender into food systems, nutrition, or agriculture programs.
Demonstrated experience in offering gender technical assistance or advisory services in the agriculture sector (facilitating trainings, gender audits, etc.).
Proven ability to conduct in-depth gender analyses and lead research teams.
Excellent understanding of global and continental commitment mechanisms for gender and nutrition in agriculture.
Knowledge of social and behavior change communication (SBCC) theory and techniques.
Understanding of nutrition-sensitive agriculture concepts in Africa.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop actionable recommendations.
Additional Information
Tanager will cover travel-associated costs for consultant(s) as needed during client engagements.
Consultants are expected to use their own laptop, internet, and other resources to deliver on assignments.
