FHI 360 (formerly Family Health International) is a nonprofit human development organization. We are seeking a qualified Driver to provide driving and messenger services to the STRIDES project in Kenya. The driver will maintain project vehicles in a clean and serviceable condition, perform minor preventive maintenance and safety checks on a daily basis, and inform the supervisor of discrepancies. The incumbent will be based in Nairobi County offering support to counties where the project will be implemented in Kenya.
Essential Job Functions: Duties and Responsibilities
- Drive project staff and visitors to meetings, appointments, and field work with due caution and courtesy as assigned by the supervisor.
- Assist with picking up and delivering project supplies as delegated.
- Maintain project vehicles in good condition, including daily internal and external cleaning, engine checks, fluid level assessments, and tire pressure monitoring.
- Maintain a current driving license and advise the Administrative Officer when vehicle licenses, inspections, and registrations are due for renewal.
- Run office errands such as message/equipment delivery, visa applications, mail collection, and courier services.
- Ensure all passengers adhere to traffic rules, regulations, and safety protocols (such as wearing seat belts).
- Report any traffic accident immediately to the supervisor and the insurance company.
- Assist with office support tasks including photocopying and collecting supplies.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Director or Administrative Officer.
Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with Kenyan counties where the STRIDES project is active, including local streets, neighborhoods, airports, and government offices.
- Skilled and safe driver with a valid driver’s license and an accident-free record.
- Physical capability to lift heavy packages and move office equipment/furniture.
- Practical ability to keep vehicles in optimal condition.
- Basic training or knowledge in First Aid.
- Ability to multitask efficiently and maintain a disciplined schedule.
- Willingness to support STRIDES program goals and work extra hours if required.
- High level of dependability and ability to work with minimal supervision.
Minimum Requirements Standards
- Secondary school ‘O’ level graduate or relevant vocational training certification with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional driving experience with public, private, or international organizations, specifically operating four-wheel-drive vehicles (e.g., Land Cruiser).
- Excellent command of both spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
- Current and valid driver’s license with an accident-free history.
- Possession of a current and valid Certificate of Good Conduct (issued within the last year).
- Full awareness of the existing traffic rules and NTSA regulations.
- Certified eye examination report.
- Professional experience driving for diplomatic missions, international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), or medium-to-large international organizations is highly advantageous.
