Kingdom Bank, a subsidiary of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, is seeking a Database Administrator to join its IT team. The successful jobholder will be responsible for the management, performance, and security of the bank's production databases. This role involves monitoring system health, managing high-availability components, and ensuring robust backup and recovery procedures are in place to support mission-critical operations.
Responsibilities
- Monitor performance and manage parameters to provide fast query responses to front-end users, ensuring the performance of production databases.
- Monitor systems logs, events, and event correlations while maintaining performance statistics and setting baseline statistics.
- Manage high-availability components, including storage and the underlying infrastructure for mission-critical databases.
- Develop, manage, and test backup and recovery plans, ensuring storage, archiving, and recovery procedures are functioning properly.
- Take a lead role in various I.T. audits by providing necessary information and enforcing the closure of audit, change management, and compliance issues.
- Manage key IT risks for all database systems and ensure proper mitigation.
- Lead BCP and disaster recovery preparedness through periodic testing as scheduled and update disaster recovery procedures, sharing results with management.
- Collaborate with application support, development, and infrastructure teams to implement and monitor system health and proactively address weaknesses.
- Perform database tasks such as schema design, capacity planning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and change control activities.
- Refine physical designs to meet system storage requirements and optimize data organization for end-users.
- Install Database Management Systems (RDBMS) using best practices, ensuring compliance with license agreements and maintaining upgrades and critical patches.
- Perform setup, configuration, and administration of MSSQL and PostgreSQL databases.
- Create and maintain database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata).
- Communicate regularly with technical, applications, and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security.
- Develop and implement standards for database maintenance and configuration under limited supervision.
- Set up and test new database and data handling systems.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- 2–3 years of experience in database technology, specifically deploying database and data warehousing technologies in production environments.
- Proficiency in Oracle, MSSQL, and PostgreSQL with strong SQL and PLSQL skills.
- Knowledge of Data Integration, Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence, OLAP, and Data Mining.
- Familiarity with ICT standards such as ITIL and COBIT.
- Proficiency in various operating systems like Linux and Windows.
- Thorough knowledge of data profiling, data modeling, data validation, and associated tools.
- Skills in database sizing, storage, performance, and security considerations.
- Strong analytical skills with knowledge of the Oracle technology stack and ICT system architectures.
