The Data Science Assistant (G5) is responsible for assisting with the exploration, identification, and acquisition of data sources (environmental, geospatial, open government, administrative, and partner-provided data) to determine their suitability for use in decision-making and advancing the goals of UNEP. This role involves supporting internal clients, developing data and analytics products, and providing training on data tools and standards.
Responsibilities
Assists with the preparation of input for response to requests for exploration, identification and acquisition of data sources to determine their suitability for use in decision making and advancing the goals of UNEP.
Assists in supporting key internal clients (programmes, regional offices, MEA secretariats) to leverage the use of data science, analytics and data engineering solutions that have been agreed by the CDO team and in accordance with established procedures, data standards and security requirements.
Assists with the preparation of input for the design and development of data and analytics products, including dashboards, standardized datasets, analytical workflows and API-based data services that can be deployed or automated by the Infrastructure and DevOps team.
Assists in providing client training and developing products, tools and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices, including guidance on data preparation, use of UNEP data catalogues and adherence to metadata standards.
Adjusts customized visualization and presentation products to reveal the findings of analysis for clients, including maps, charts and tables, ensuring consistency with UNEP visual identity and data quality requirements.
Assists with the preparation of data sets (cleaning, transforming, merging, tagging, documenting) and responds to data-related queries; maintains/updates web pages, dashboards and knowledge bases related to CDO data assets.
Works closely with data engineers and infrastructure staff to ensure that data products are organized, well-documented and ready for deployment in production environments.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Work Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of relevant working experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, or related area is required.
Alternative Experience: The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
Desirable Experience: Experience supporting digital/data projects, including data preparation, visualization or dashboarding, in an international or multi-location setting is desirable.
