Job Description
The Communications Officer at Pwani University is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing internal and external communication strategies. The role aims to enhance institutional visibility, protect and promote the University’s corporate image, support effective information flow, and strengthen engagement with stakeholders in line with the University’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and implement the University’s internal and external communication strategies.
Manage media relations and institutional branding efforts.
Write for diverse audiences including management, staff, students, and the general public.
Manage social media platforms and create engaging content for blogs or websites.
Organize and coordinate University events, exhibitions, and marketing activities.
Enhance institutional visibility and promote the University’s corporate image.
Support effective information flow and strengthen engagement with stakeholders.
Requirements
Academic Qualifications:
Earned Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Corporate Communications, Journalism, Mass Communication, Communications and Public Relations, International Relations and Diplomacy, Communication Studies, or Communication and Media from a recognized and accredited institution.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Professional Qualifications:
Registered member of a relevant professional body (e.g., Public Relations Society Kenya (PRSK), Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), or Media Council of Kenya).
Possess technical certification in Public Relations, Corporate Communication, Media Relations, or Digital Communication / Social Media Management (or equivalent).
Experience:
At least 5 years of relevant experience as a Senior Corporate Communication officer or a comparable position.
Experience in handling Corporate communication, Public relations, and Media or institutional communication in a public institution, university, or large organization.
Exposure in writing for diverse audiences (management, staff, students, public).
Expertise in managing social media platforms and creating engaging content.
Experience in organizing and coordinating University events and exhibitions.
Skills and Competencies:
Excellent communication, persuasive, and negotiation skills.
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Strategic thinking, logical reasoning, and sound decision-making ability.
