Job Description
The Clinical Nurse in the Critical Care Units is responsible for providing specialized, high-quality nursing care to patients with life-threatening conditions. This role requires the ability to perform advanced clinical assessments, monitor hemodynamic status, and respond rapidly to medical emergencies within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Responsibilities
Complete initial and ongoing assessment and re-assessment of patients to identify their care needs.
Develop written care plans based on changing patient needs, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
Initiate cardiac monitoring (both bedside and central), interpret monitor trends, and communicate critical changes to physicians and the Nurse Manager.
Perform other hemodynamic monitoring, including CVP, ICP, neurological evaluations, and fluid status assessments.
Document all assessment data, investigations, care provided, and team/family interactions accurately and in a timely manner.
Prepare for and assist physicians in emergency procedures such as intubation and insertion of invasive lines or drains.
Initiate mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) based on medical orders.
Assess patient readiness for weaning and implement weaning and extubation protocols.
Maintain airway management including oxygen therapy, nebulization, and suctioning.
Perform pain assessments and initiate analgesia according to hospital protocols.
Perform and monitor hemodialysis therapy as instructed.
Administer medications accurately, with specific attention to the dilution, calculation, and infusion of inotropic support.
Identify patient and family education needs and implement teaching.
Manage enteral feeding, assessing absorption and elimination and providing feedback.
Recognize pre-arrest or arrest states, activate the Emergency Response Team, and participate in resuscitation.
Provide a safe environment through adherence to infection control practices and safety policies.
Perform timely safety checks on beds, IV pumps, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.
Ensure efficient use of resources, including accurate billing of ward stock and consumables.
Participate in unit-based education, quality improvement (QI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC), audits, and skill checks.
Mentor junior nurses and students and assist in the orientation of new staff.
Assist in other Critical Care Units during times of low patient census.
Requirements
Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing from a recognized school of nursing or University.
Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Demonstrated evidence-based knowledge of current practices in Critical Care nursing.
