Job Description
Role Overview
The Laboratory Technician – Human Anatomy at the School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences will be responsible for the overall maintenance, cleanliness, and order in the laboratory and will assist the Laboratory Technologist in the day-to-day activities of the laboratory. Reporting to the Senior Laboratory Technologist in charge of the Anatomy Laboratory, the successful candidate will also be expected to engage in community service.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting in preparation of reagents, samples, and specimens for practical classes.
General maintenance and cleanliness of the Gross Anatomy laboratory, including preparing cleaning schedules.
Assisting in identification, collection, and preservation of samples and specimens.
Assisting in setup and maintenance of dissection stations.
Noting breakages and other incidences in the laboratory on incidence reports.
Maintaining laboratory stock records and inventory for supplies, reagents, and equipment.
Maintaining a clean and sanitary working area in accordance with WHO’s Good Laboratory Practices.
Ensuring the return of all solutions, chemicals, and apparatus used in laboratory exercises.
Assisting with dissection and pro-section of cadavers for study.
Storage of supplies and equipment, disposing of solutions, used samples, and specimens according to guidelines, and keeping storerooms and working areas orderly and clean.
Remaining abreast of any legislative or industry changes and adjustments that may materially affect health and safety management within the anatomy laboratory.
Cleaning up after each lab session by washing, sterilizing tools, and decontaminating lab equipment and supplies.
Assisting in "tagging" of specimens for practical examinations.
Maintaining sharps containers and disposable biological waste in accordance with facility protocol.
Preparing preservative solutions for embalming.
Performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Educational Qualifications & Professional Experience
Certificate in Mortuary Sciences from an accredited institution with experience in preparation of Human Anatomy / Pathology specimens.
Diploma in Mortuary Sciences from an accredited institution with experience in preparation of Human Anatomy / Pathology specimens.
Experience in working in an Anatomy lab will be an added advantage.
