Surgical Technician, OR Recovery

Responsibilities

• Gather, check, and open supplies and equipment required for specific surgical procedures.
• Set up the sterile back table and mayo stand with appropriate instruments, supplies, and medications or solutions.
• Perform initial and subsequent surgical counts (sponges, needles, instruments) in coordination with the circulating nurse.
• Assist the scrubbed team members with the gowning and gloving process.
• Assist with patient draping to establish and maintain a sterile field.
• Secure sterile cords, tubing, and other accessories during the setup.
• Participate in the surgical site and patient verification during the standard 'time out' procedure.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and pass instruments, supplies, and medications during the procedure.
• Measure and pass haemostatic agents and irrigation solutions as utilized by the surgical team.
• Hold retractors or instruments and coordinate camera or endoscopic tools as directed by the surgeon.
• Perform additional surgical counts during cavity and skin closure or whenever necessary.
• Prepare sterile dressings and immobilization devices as required.
• Prepare and hand off specimens appropriately for laboratory analysis.
• Participate in the debriefing process and quality improvement practices to ensure high standards of patient care.
• Hand over verified instruments to the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) technician for sterilization post-procedure.

Requirements

• Must have completed a Surgical Technician course from a recognized training institution.
• Proficiency in computer literacy for clinical documentation and communication.
• Previous experience in a theatre environment is highly preferred.
• Ability to maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
