The role of the Strategic Communications and External Engagement Advisor is to work closely with the Oxfam International Executive Director (OIED) and the Leadership Collective, leading the team on the OIED’s external “influencing and engagement” work. This is a crucial advisory position aimed at maximizing the OIED's international public profile to achieve the aims of the Oxfam confederation.
Job Dimensions and Responsibilities
- The Advisor will work closely with the OIED and the Leadership Collective to lead the external influencing and engagement work.
- Responsible for producing and delivering the OIED external strategy, which must be underpinned by analytics and responsive to a dynamic and changing external environment.
- Works collaboratively with Oxfam advocacy and communications leaders, external allies and partners to position the OIED as Oxfam’s leading influencer in target sectors, in line with advocacy and public engagement objectives and priorities.
- Responsible for messaging and for managing high-level executive engagements, including summits (e.g., Davos), events, speaking opportunities, external commissions, boards and committees. This work is often executed on behalf of the Confederation as a whole.
- Works together with the media team to manage the OIED's presence in media and social media channels.
- Will help lead oversight of the effective management of the OIED’s relationships with public figures and manage Oxfam’s relationships with key institutions the OIED works closely with.
- Specifically, the Advisor will work to deliver specific initiatives with other internal leaders which report to the OIED.
- Works closely to input into internal priorities for advocacy and public engagement and must be prepared to support during situations of crisis management. In some cases, the Advisor will represent the OIED, as delegated.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
To successfully execute this role, the Strategic Communications and External Engagement Advisor to the OIED requires:
- A strong understanding of high-level public engagement and influencing and communications strategies to ensure the OIED’s international public profile helps to achieve the aims of the Oxfam confederation.
- The ability to plan and influence strategically.
- The ability to assimilate and process complex policy information in order to identify and implement advocacy and communications opportunities and actions.
- Excellent diplomacy and communications skills.
- The ability to work effectively in a high-pressure and high-intensity environment.
Minimum Qualification: BA/BSc/HND.
