The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world's environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the environment.
This role involves serving as a Statistics Consultant under the direct guidance of the Programme Management Officer (Statistician) in the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section of the Office of Science of UNEP. The consultant is responsible for tasks focusing on data sources related to climate change and gender at the national level, specifically focusing on data in Tanzania.
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
- Guidance and Scope: Work under the direct guidance of the Programme Management Officer (Statistician) in the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section of the Office of Science of UNEP.
- Data Mapping and Analysis: Conduct the mapping and analyses process of data sources on climate change and gender at the national level. This work should specifically focus on available national data sources, including censuses, statistical surveys, administrative records, geospatial data, monitoring systems, scientific research, citizen-generated data, and Big data.
- Collaboration and Communication: The task requires good communication skills and should be carried out in close collaboration with the national focal point in the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain communication with relevant ministries or agencies such as the Ministry of Environment, other environment and climate-change related ministries and agencies, Ministry on social and gender issues, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working on gender issues at the national level, and maintain contact with relevant experts in the RCO.
Qualifications and Special Skills
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/HND) in economics, statistics, sociology, environmental science, data science, information science, gender studies or another related field is required.
- A master’s degree (MBA/MSc/MA) in the related field is highly desirable.
Experience:
- At least 2 years of technical experience working with national statistics and data is required.
- Experience in environment, climate change, disaster-related or gender statistics is required.
- Experience working with national statistical offices on data collection/reporting is desirable.
Required Skills:
- Good communication skills are essential for effective collaboration.
