The role of a Senior Medical Specialist in Gastroenterology is to provide specialized diagnosis, treatment, and management of gastrointestinal disorders. This involves advanced clinical evaluation and endoscopic procedures, adherence to evidence-based practices, ensuring patient safety, and contributing to research, training, and multidisciplinary care within the hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of the Gastroenterology Unit, the position holder will be responsible for the following:
- Providing expert diagnosis and management of patients with gastrointestinal disorders, including complex and chronic conditions.
- Performing advanced endoscopic procedures such as upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with clinical guidelines.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including surgeons, oncologists, and nutritionists, to deliver comprehensive patient care.
- Developing individualized treatment plans for patients with gastrointestinal diseases, ensuring evidence-based practice.
- Monitoring patient progress and adjusting treatment regimens based on clinical response and diagnostic findings.
- Ensuring compliance with hospital protocols, national clinical standards, and infection control measures during procedures.
- Participating in clinical research, academic teaching, and continuous professional development to advance gastroenterology practice.
- Mentoring junior doctors, interns, and medical students in gastroenterology procedures and patient management.
- Any other duty as may be assigned.
Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and and Dentists Council.
- Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Sub-specialty in Gastroenterology from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- At least three (3) years working experience as a Medical Specialist.
- Retention in the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council register.
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Recognition as a sub-specialist by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Valid Practice License from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Professional Insurance Indemnity Cover.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
