This role provides essential legal support to Britam's Centralized business segment. The Senior Legal Associate is responsible for formulating and implementing policies and procedures to ensure the business remains fully compliant with all laws and regulations, while effectively managing legal risks.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Advisory: Advise the division on all matters touching on the law and provide high-quality, researched, and reasoned legal opinions to manage risks effectively.
Dispute Management: Review newly instituted legal matters, respond to demand letters, and make best efforts to resolve disputes before they escalate to litigation.
Regulatory Compliance: Research and interpret regulatory requirements for new products/services and handle complex insurance regulatory compliance issues.
Legal Research: Keep current on national legal requirements and communicate new statutory developments to the executive team.
Litigation Coordination: Liaise with external lawyers on the conduct of court matters and coordinate with internal staff for required documentation and witnesses.
Settlements and Payments: Negotiate out-of-court settlements to save costs and facilitate the processing of legal fees and judgments.
Document Management: Prepare agreements for the appointment of advocates and ensure the safe custody and confidentiality of suit papers, company records, contracts, and trademarks.
Corporate Governance: Ensure compliance and up-to-date records of all Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), LLPs, and trademarks within the segment.
Policy Implementation: Manage legal documents and facilitate execution in line with the Contract Management Policy.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) and a Diploma in Law (KSL).
Professional Status: Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya holding a valid practicing certificate.
Experience: A minimum of 3 years post-admission experience.
Sector Experience: 3-6 years of relevant experience in the commercial department of a busy law firm or a legal corporate environment.
