Role Overview
The Senior Lecturer (Grade AC 13) at Laikipia University is an academic leadership position reporting to the Chairperson of the Department (CoD). The role involves delivering high-quality education, leading curriculum development, and contributing significantly to the university's research output and community service initiatives. The successful candidate will be expected to provide academic guidance to both undergraduate and postgraduate students while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead in the curriculum development and review process to ensure academic excellence and industry relevance.
- Develop appropriate learning and teaching materials to ensure effective delivery of the subject matter.
- Participate in the development of research projects to extend knowledge in the relevant subject area.
- Participate in the provision of service to the community and the profession.
- Participate in the translation and implementation of knowledge into practice.
- Participate in discussions on examination results in departments, schools, and the senate to ensure effectiveness and general improved performance.
- Provide expertise in areas of specialization for income-generation programs for the university.
- Prepare and deliver course outlines, materials, and content to students.
- Deliver lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students for knowledge acquisition and the attainment of degrees.
- Conduct continual evaluation of students’ coursework to determine effectiveness of delivery and assess performance.
- Maintain accurate records of students’ attendance, assignments, and continuous assessments for accountability and academic advising.
- Generate innovation activities and intellectual property in the area of specialization.
- Undertake academic consultancies and serve as a member of departmental and school academic boards.
- Undertake publishing in peer-reviewed articles, books, and book chapters.
- Supervise both postgraduate and undergraduate research works to completion.
- Conduct internal moderation of exams and serve as patron to academic clubs or student organizations.
- Participate in ad hoc and statutory university committees.
Requirements and Qualifications
- An earned PhD or equivalent degree qualification (or a Master’s degree qualification in special cases) in the relevant field from an accredited and recognized university.
- At least three (3) years of continuous teaching experience at the university level as a Lecturer or six (6) years of research/industry experience.
- A minimum of thirty-two (32) publication points as a Lecturer or equivalent, of which at least twenty-four (24) should be from refereed scholarly journals.
- Proven experience in supervising postgraduate students (at least 3 Master’s or 1 PhD and 1 Master’s) to completion as a Lecturer or equivalent.
- Registration with a relevant professional body (where applicable).
- Must meet the minimum points requirements for the AC 13 subcategory for appointment/promotion.
- Ability to utilize Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) systems is an added advantage.
- Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
