Role Overview
Durham School provides a first-class all-around educational experience for students from age 3 through to 18. We are recruiting a Schoolwide SENCo to determine the strategic development of the SEN provision, ensuring the school identifies and responds effectively to students with special educational needs. The role involves managing the daily operation of SEN support, coordinating with parents and external specialists, and leading professional development for staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Together with the Heads of School and Board of Directors, determine the strategic development of the SEN provision. Ensure the school has a clear approach to identifying and responding to students with special educational needs and review policies (SEN, EAL, G&T) annually.
- Assessment and Identification: Build identification of SEN into progress monitoring, identify students requiring support using data and coordinated testing, and involve parents in decision-making regarding interventions and progress.
- Support Programme Management: Provide guidance to colleagues on teaching strategies for students with learning difficulties. Manage EAL programmes and extension activities for gifted and talented students. Refer and liaise with external professionals including psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Maintain accurate records for all students with SEN to track progress. Complete IEPs and chair termly review meetings with parents and teachers. Maintain an up-to-date register of learning support needs.
- Staff Development: Prepare and lead SEN training for teachers and teaching assistants to improve their understanding of different kinds of educational needs and support strategies.
- Resourcing and Access: Manage budgets for schoolwide resources and ensure adequate equipment for diverse needs. Oversee the application for public exam access arrangements and accommodations.
- School Life: Contribute to the busy life of the school through participation in the school's co-curricular programme, parent meetings, and events such as assemblies, plays, and concerts.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Must be a fully qualified teacher with a minimum of 5 years teaching experience.
- Must hold a valid Teacher Services Commission (TSC) Certificate (if applying from Kenya) or a PGCE or QTS or equivalent (for overseas applicants).
- Have a minimum of a Level 5 qualification in Specific Learning Difficulties.
- Enthusiastic and passionate educator with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Adventurous, adaptable, and excited by new experiences.
