Role Overview
Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited (Kenya Re) is seeking a Regional Chief Executive Officer to provide strategic and operational leadership to its Zambia subsidiary. The subsidiary’s regional mandate includes Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Eswatini, and Lesotho. The primary objective of this role is to ensure sustainable growth of quality reinsurance business, strong financial performance, robust governance, and full alignment with Group strategy, policies, and Board expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Provide strategic and operational direction to the Zambia subsidiary and the wider SADC regional mandate.
- Business Growth: Drive market development and innovation to ensure sustainable growth of quality reinsurance business.
- Financial Performance: Manage P&L and deliver sustained bottom-line improvement.
- Underwriting & Risk: Oversee risk-appropriate underwriting across multiple regulatory environments.
- Stakeholder Management: Maintain and deepen relationships with regulators, boards, senior executives, and other key stakeholders.
- Team Leadership: Build and lead a high-performing, future-ready multicultural team.
- Compliance & Governance: Ensure full alignment with Group strategy, policies, and regional regulatory requirements (including PIA standards).
Job Requirements
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Commerce, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university.
- Master’s Degree in Insurance, Finance, Accounting, Actuarial Science, Business Administration (MBA), Economics, Strategic Management, or an equivalent qualification.
Professional Qualifications
- Chartered Insurance Institute (CII)/ ACII from a recognized institution.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), ACCA-London, or equivalent qualifications.
- Membership in good standing with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), Institute of Risk Management (IRM), Society of Actuaries (SOA), or an equivalent body.
- Certificate in a Leadership Course (minimum 4 weeks) is an added advantage.
Experience
- At least fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years in senior management or a comparable position within the insurance, reinsurance, or financial services sector.
- Demonstrable experience in managing entities or significant portfolios within the SADC region, including multi-country operations and cross-border regulatory engagement.
- Proven track record of growing profitable business and managing P&L.
- Completion of a Management or Executive Development Programme (minimum 4 weeks).
Skills and Competencies
- Strong strategic thinking capability and commercial acumen.
- Expertise in Underwriting, Financial Management, Governance, and Performance Oversight.
- Deep knowledge of Pan-African and SADC markets.
- Broad knowledge of insurance, reinsurance, investment, trade, and treasury products.
- Proven leadership, stakeholder management, and change management skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Working knowledge of Portuguese or other regional languages (Angola/Mozambique) is a distinct advantage.
- Must meet integrity and fit-and-proper requirements stipulated by the Pension and Insurance Authority (PIA).
