Role Overview
The Protection Officer is responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating humanitarian protection activities. The role focuses on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), child protection, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) within refugee and host communities. The officer will work closely with county officials, community leaders, and 'Protection Champions' to ensure effective case identification, referral, and awareness-raising.
Key Responsibilities
- Training & Supervision: Plan and supervise training for county officials (government offices, healthcare personnel, social workers, teachers) and Protection Champions on case identification and referral systems.
- Community Engagement: Coordinate the selection and training of Protection Champions in villages on topics such as harmful practices (FGM, early marriage), GBV, children's rights, and disability inclusion.
- Technical Oversight: Harmonize technical content for training sessions and community dialogues in collaboration with county partners.
- Awareness Campaigns: Support awareness-raising campaigns with elders, women, youth, and religious leaders to promote a protective environment.
- Resource Management: Ensure the production and distribution of awareness materials in local languages including Somali, Swahili, and Orma.
- MHPSS Coordination: Manage mobile MHPSS services, including psychologist visits and group/individual counseling, ensuring integration into referral pathways.
- Reporting: Prepare periodic technical reports on protection activities for internal use and donor requirements.
- Representation: Participate in coordination meetings with local authorities and project partners.
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, Human Rights, Gender Studies, or related disciplines.
- At least 5 years of experience managing or coordinating humanitarian protection projects (GBV, child protection, or MHPSS).
- Proven experience in training public and community workers on protection issues.
- Deep knowledge of Kenyan referral systems and county-level protection policies.
- Experience working with refugee and host communities in fragile contexts.
- Technical expertise in disability inclusion and positive parenting frameworks.
- Ability to draft technical reports and collect field data effectively.
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili; proficiency in Somali is an added advantage.
