Job Description
Peace Winds is a disaster preparedness, response, and recovery organization that advocates for increased collaboration between governments, militaries, NGOs, and the private sector. The Project Field Assistant will be a key member of a team engaging with communities in Turkana County to reduce solid waste generation and improve environmental hygiene.
Role Overview
The primary focus of this role is to coordinate activities with beneficiaries and stakeholders in Kakuma Town, Kalobeyei Town, Kakuma Refugee Camp, and the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement. The project aims to establish a decentralized solid waste management system for a recyclable society. This involves program strategy assistance, data collection, and coordination of implementation with various stakeholders, including government departments and partners.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Project Management and Development
Promote sustainable solid waste management by encouraging households and business owners to segregate waste correctly and participate in community clean-up action day activities.
Understand solid waste management systems in Kenya and operational realities to support the adoption of suitable waste management practices tailored for both host and refugee communities.
Fostering sustainable structures through ongoing engagement with local residents and relevant stakeholders.
Support workshops for community-based organizations (CBOs) and community leaders involved in waste collection and recycling to strengthen proper waste management behaviors.
Monitor financial data such as income and expenditure to support the financial sustainability of activities and enhance economic independence.
Monitoring and Reporting
Monitor the operation of decentralized solid waste management systems, ensuring resident and stakeholder feedback is integrated into project operations.
Support the collection and organization of baseline data on the composition, quantity, and disposal destinations of solid waste.
Review the progress of waste management plans developed by communities and market committees, supporting the development of long-term sustainable structures.
Monitor the efficiency and financial status of recyclable materials at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and recycling centers (e.g., compression, shredding, and production of recycled products).
Summarize findings in reports and share analyses with stakeholders to facilitate problem-solving.
Support quality control systems and marketing strategies for recycled products.
Planning and Budgeting
Support the preparation of activity budgets and implementation plans.
Ensure project activities are executed smoothly within the specified timeframe.
Prepare implementation and procurement plans for timely submission to supervisors.
General Tasks
Facilitate workshops and training sessions through coaching and guidance.
Assist with the procurement, coordination, delivery, use, and accountability of project resources.
Record activities through training session reports, participant assessments, and attendance lists.
Manage training logistics, including arranging materials, venues, equipment, meals, and refreshments.
Requirements and Qualifications
Essential:
Advanced facilitation skills in the local language of the host community.
Residency in Kakuma or Kalobeyei is mandatory.
Educational background: BA/BSc/HND.
Desirable & Beneficial:
Ability to communicate effectively with both host and refugee communities and prepare professional reports.
A degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, or Community Health from a recognized institution is highly beneficial.
Familiarity with local humanitarian conditions.
