The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is a fully government-owned company in Kenya's energy sector, formed in 2008 as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to accelerate the development of geothermal resources. GDC is tasked with developing steam fields and selling geothermal steam for electricity generation.
Job Summary
This role involves providing technical leadership in the management of the company’s comprehensive insurance programme. The job holder is responsible for ensuring the effective handling of insurance policies, managing claims efficiently, and maintaining stringent compliance with relevant regulatory matters.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervising the development of sound insurance and regulatory affairs policies and procedures.
- Providing technical guidance on the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and strategies to ensure the company complies with applicable regulations, and in tandem with changing government and industry legislation.
- Ensuring that all necessary licensing, filings, certifications, and permits are duly obtained and monitored to always ensure compliance.
- Organizing the company’s insurance portfolio and providing quarterly reports on each policy, pertinent issues relating to each policy, claims lodged documentation status, and expected settlement.
- Providing technical guidance in the Company’s insurance program.
- Coordinating and guiding on the preparation of insurance proposals.
- Supervising research and reviews on existing laws that impact on the company’s core functions.
- Ensuring follow up and closing Insurance Claims. Preparing insurance procurement plans and insurance tender documents in liaison with the procurement department.
- Verifying policy documents to confirm GDC requirements are met, perusing risk notes and brokers’ reports, and vetting all insurance payments.
- Liaising with heads of departments on documentation for company claims and with staff on staff personal injury claims.
- Coordinating with external consultants for risk surveys and insurance claims investigations.
- Managing all insurance policies/contracts; effectively managing claims files for expedited settlement of claims.
- Monitoring insurance budget performance and advising on the same.
- Employee performance management through target setting, monitoring, and appraisal.
Job Specifications and Requirements
Experience and Education:
- A minimum period of eight (8) years relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been in a supervisory role.
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Bachelor of Commerce (Insurance), Social Science, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks.
Professional Qualifications and Compliance:
- Membership of IIPK/SCII or any other relevant body.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
