The Perioperative Nurse in-Charge, based in Bomet, is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all nursing operations within the comprehensive perioperative units, which include the Theatre, Cath Lab, POHA (Pre-Operative Holding Area), PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit), and CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department). This leadership role ensures smooth workflows, seamless multidisciplinary collaboration, and adherence to the highest standards of clinical practice and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and coordinate all nursing operations across Theatre, Cath Lab, POHA, PACU, and CSSD, ensuring smooth workflows and seamless multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Ensure full compliance with professional nursing standards, clinical policies, regulatory requirements, and infection prevention and control protocols across all perioperative units.
- Lead staffing management, including scheduling, assignments, leave planning, and maintaining optimal coverage based on service demand.
- Monitor departmental performance through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), audits, and quality metrics, and implement continuous improvement and risk-management initiatives.
- Develop, update, and enforce standard operating procedures in alignment with best practices and organizational objectives.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance of theatre equipment and ensure a clean, safe, and compliant environment for patients, staff, and procedures.
- Drive team development through regular communication, clinical education, mentorship, and activities that strengthen teamwork, professionalism, and operational cohesion.
Key Requirements and Qualifications
Candidates must possess strong clinical and managerial competence supported by the following requirements:
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a recognized institution, coupled with a Higher National Diploma in Peri-operative Nursing.
- Licensure: Valid registration and active license with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a medium to large operating theatre setting, including at least 2 years spent in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, infection prevention, and patient safety standards.
- Core Skills: Demonstrated leadership, communication, supervisory, and quality-improvement capability. Strong analytical, decision-making, attention to detail, and high standards of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
