This role is for a Part-Time Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary Swimming/PE Coach based at the Tatu International campus. The coach is responsible for developing, managing, and executing the school's swimming program, coaching students in techniques and competition strategies, and ensuring a safe and supportive sports environment. This position involves both administrative planning (vision creation, stakeholder investment, competition scheduling) and hands-on instruction.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Associate Dean of Students to create a vision for the swimming program and invest stakeholders in the vision.
- Oversee the in-house and regional swimming relationships and ensure the school is scheduled for all competitions.
- Create new and support existing partnering by reaching out to schools and other relevant places to seek friendlies and other joint events.
- Plan and supervise swimming galas, external competitions, manage external competition registration, and accompany students for external swimming galas.
- Develop a strong school team to represent the school in competitions.
- Develop a training program for all the training sessions in accordance with the school guidelines.
- Coach and instruct swimmers individually or as a group regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Work with the Dean of Students to procure all needed swimming equipment.
- Ensure attendance is taken at the beginning and the end of the training sessions.
- Hold coaching sessions with swimmers throughout the academic day and residential evening.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
- Observing, assessing, and recording students' performance, giving appropriate feedback, and maintaining records of pupils' progress and development for the school leadership and parents.
- Providing and conducting assessments, reports, and references relating to individual students or groups of students.
- Evaluate competitive swimmers termly, assign them levels every term, and create individual plans for growth.
- Take attendance daily, monitor and keep records/reports of the children's progress and development.
- Instruct students individually and in groups, adapting teaching methods to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Providing pastoral care and support to students, providing them with a secure environment to swim.
- Prepare the pool area prior to each lesson/training session to facilitate safe, creative play, and to bring out the best in each swimmer.
- Ensure the changing rooms are clean with safety mats, external pool areas are clean and pool lanes are clearly marked.
- Ensure adequate materials are ready for students.
- Managing the safe and efficient transition of students to and from swimming sessions.
- Ensure simple first aid procedures are done to injured students during swimming sessions.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and policies and procedures to maintain order among students by providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behaviour.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
- Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Keep, maintain, and regularly update professional records – Records of work covered, progress records, rubrics, and students' portfolios.
- Any other duty as assigned by your manager.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience and Certifications:
- Registered and active member of the Kenya Swimming Federation.
- Holder of Kenya Swimming Federation Level 3 coaching certification or above.
- Possess a Lifesaver certification.
- 1 – 3 years of experience in a similar position working with swimmers.
- Basic first-aid training.
- A relevant degree/diploma/certificate in Physical Education or Sports/ Recreational Science is desirable (BA/BSc/HND).
- Proven track record of implementing successful swimming programs and competitions is highly desirable.
- Adequate knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
- Knowledgeable in a variety of swimming programs.
