The role of Medical Specialist (Clinical Oncology) involves providing highly specialized clinical oncology care. The primary objective is diagnosing and managing cancer patients through integrated treatment plans utilizing systemic anti-cancer therapies and radiotherapy.
Job Purpose
To provide specialized clinical oncology care by diagnosing and managing cancer patients through integrated treatment plans that combine systemic anti-cancer therapies and radiotherapy.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Oncology, the position holder will be responsible for the following:
- Diagnosing and staging cancers through clinical evaluation, imaging interpretation, and pathology review.
- Developing and implementing individualized treatment plans that integrate systemic anti-cancer therapies (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy) and radiotherapy.
- Prescribing and monitoring systemic therapies, ensuring safe administration and managing treatment-related toxicities.
- Collaborating with radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, and multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive cancer care.
- Participating in tumor boards and multidisciplinary case discussions to optimize treatment strategies.
- Providing palliative care, pain management, and symptom control for patients requiring supportive care.
- Engaging in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and continuous medical education to advance oncology practice.
- Mentoring junior doctors, interns, and medical students in clinical oncology principles and practice.
- Ensuring adherence to national and international oncology protocols, safety standards, and ethical guidelines.
- Any other duty as may be assigned.
Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements
Candidates must possess the following essential qualifications:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Masters degree in Medicine in Clinical Oncology or equivalent from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Retention in the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council register.
- Recognition as a Specialist by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Valid Practice License as a specialist from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Professional Insurance Indemnity Cover.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
