The role of the Legal Officer is vital for Kenya Highlands University (formerly Kenya Highlands Evangelical University), a fully-fledged (Chartered) institution of higher learning sponsored by Africa Gospel Church. The University is located in Kericho County, Kericho Town, and provides higher education that integrates Faith with scholarship.
The Legal Officer shall be in charge of all University legal affairs and serve as the dedicated Legal Advisor to the University Council and Management Board. This position reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Roles include:
- Provide legal counsel to the University Council and Management Board.
- In consultation with user departments, negotiate, draft, and review all agreements and contracts between the University and other parties, and report findings to the University Management Board.
- Preparation of legal or quasi-legal documents for the University as may be required from time to time.
- Advise the University on compliance with all the relevant statutory and regulatory requirements in its operations.
- Represent the University in all legal matters.
- Handling cases involving the University in liaison with external lawyers where applicable.
- Ensure formulated policies and procedures adhere to internal and external regulations.
- Be a Commissioner of Oaths and Notary Public for the University.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the University Management.
Requirements for Appointment
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Christian in good standing.
- Have a Bachelor’s degree in law (LL. B) from a recognized University.
- Be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practicing certificate.
- Have served in the grade of Legal Officer for a period of Four (4) years or in a comparable and relevant position with demonstrable working experience in conveyancing, labour laws, public procurement law, commercial law, legal drafting, and strong negotiation skills.
- Have demonstrable ICT skills.
- Meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya (relevant documents must be attached).
- Have demonstrable professional competence and high administrative ability in work performance and results.
- Those with a Master’s degree in law (LL.M) shall have an added advantage.
