Legal Counsel

FIDA-Kenya is a non-profit organization that seeks to increase access to justice by women through formal and informal justice systems. FIDA-Kenya envisions a society that respects and upholds women’s rights. The mission of FIDA Kenya is to promote women’s individual and collective power to claim their rights in all spheres of life. The Legal Counsel plays a critical role in fulfilling this mission by providing essential legal services, managing key organizational programs, building strategic partnerships, and actively participating in resource mobilization efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

LEGAL ADVICE AND REPRESENTATION

• Provides FIDA-K clients with legal advice and referral services when required.
• Prepare pleadings and legal briefs.
• Conduct Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), mediation between parties, and referrals to Informal Justice Systems.
• Handle court attendance.
• Engage in Strategic Impact Litigation.

NETWORKING & BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

• Assist in coordination of open days, legal aid, and other workshops organized by the Team.
• Represent the Organisation in meetings with stakeholders and strategic partners.
• Coordinate Pro Bono lawyers.
• Establish linkages with strategic partners.

PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT

• Conduct Trainings including clients on self-representation and Informal Justice Systems.
• Oversee the implementation of grants (projects) and prepare required donor reports.
• Handle report writing.

RESOURCE MOBILIZATION

• Identify support in resource mobilization strategies.
• Identify viable projects relevant to the team.
• Collaborate with the grants team to develop proposals.
• Attend meetings with Donors.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
• Minimum two (2) years post admission experience as a practicing Advocate.
• Must be a Certified Professional Mediator or hold Qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
• Possess excellent writing, editing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
• Be very detail-oriented with strong interpersonal, organizational, and coordination skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, to multi-task, and to work effectively under pressure.
