This position seeks a highly skilled legal and compliance professional with a strong foundation in regulatory frameworks, corporate governance, data protection, and risk management. The successful candidate must demonstrate attention to detail, excellent problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to provide timely legal and compliance guidance.
The officer is expected to be comfortable working independently while maintaining strong collaboration across departments and with external advisors to ensure regulatory compliance, robust corporate governance, and effective company secretarial and administrative support.
Summary of Responsibilities
The core duties and responsibilities include:
- Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to Health & Safety rules, which is an integral part of all job duties, implemented in accordance with Group H&S guidelines.
- Legal Advisory: Provide comprehensive legal advice, guidance, and risk mitigation support across the organization.
- Contract Management: Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Litigation Oversight: Oversee litigation management, including coordination with external counsel, court processes, and reporting.
- Regulatory Monitoring: Monitor and ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and Amsons Group policies.
- Compliance Support: Support compliance training, investigations, and implementation of Minimum Control Standards.
- Data Protection: Drive data protection and records management compliance, including internal audits, reporting, and training activities.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary contact with regulatory authorities on legal and data protection matters.
- Company Secretariat Assistance: Assist the Company Secretary with board administration, meetings, and shareholder matters.
- Intellectual Property: Support management of the company’s intellectual property portfolio and related disputes.
- Risk Monitoring: Monitor legal risks in business operations, marketing, trade, and customer activities.
- Financial Control: Contribute to department cost control, budget monitoring, and approval of legal invoices.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
Level of Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent.
- Admission to the Kenyan Bar (or relevant jurisdiction) is required.
- Added Advantage: A Master’s degree or professional certifications in corporate/commercial law, compliance, or data protection.
- Desirable Certifications: Professional certifications in corporate governance, compliance, or data protection (e.g., ICPAK, CIPP/E, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer).
- Added Advantage: Certified Company Secretary qualification.
Technical Competencies
- Minimum of 5–8 years’ experience in both external and in-house legal practice, primarily in the manufacturing or corporate environment.
- Expertise in legal advisory, contract drafting, litigation management, and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated experience in handling legal compliance matters, delivering training on legislative requirements, and leading regulatory engagements.
- Familiarity with Kenyan government functions and legislative processes affecting businesses.
- Knowledge of data protection laws and experience implementing compliance frameworks.
- Experience supporting company secretarial functions, including board administration and shareholder management.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and risk management skills.
