Lecturer - Language Education (Kiswahili and English)

The Lecturer role in Language Education (Kiswahili and English) at The Open University of Kenya is a vital academic position centered on teaching, research, mentorship, and institutional service. Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following core duties:

1. Conduct research, publish findings, and mentor students effectively to meet University goals.
2. Create innovative research proposals to secure funding and elevate student research opportunities.
3. Produce scholarly publications to enhance professional growth and the University's research ranking.
4. Advocate for innovative teaching methods both locally and globally.
5. Lead research projects addressing community challenges and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
6. Secure research funding and provide high-quality supervision for students.
7. Design and implement curriculum aimed at producing industry-ready graduates.
8. Organize practical learning experiences and supervise Teaching Assistants.
9. Set and moderate examinations to ensure quality academic standards.
10. Provide individualized support to improve student performance and address their needs.
11. Engage students in critical thinking and meaningful discourse.
12. Undertake consultancies and showcase innovations to enhance the University's reputation.
13. Establish collaborative partnerships for resource mobilization and community engagement.
14. Present research findings internationally and contribute to societal development through volunteerism.
15. Contribute to University management, administrative processes, and student well-being.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

For appointment to this grade, candidates MUST meet the following mandatory requirements:

• An earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree qualification in the relevant field from an accredited university recognized by the OUK Senate.
• Served for a cumulative period of six (6) years, three (3) of which in the Grade of Tutorial Fellow/Junior Research Fellow in the relevant field.
• A minimum of twenty-four (24) publication points, of which at least sixteen (16) should be derived from refereed journal papers.
• Registered or registerable with the relevant professional body (where applicable).
• Demonstrate in-depth professional/discipline-specific knowledge and experience in a specialized field or broad knowledge across a number of related fields.

Terms of Service

The Terms of Service will be either Permanent and Pensionable OR Contract, as shall be determined by the University Council.
