This is a technical role as a Laboratory Analyst at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), responsible for undertaking essential laboratory work to support the institute’s research into aquatic systems (marine and freshwater). The incumbent will be one of seven (7) posts filled under this contract position.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail:
- Identifying the necessary chemicals and consumables required for conducting experiments.
- Collecting and preparing samples and specimens, and managing and safely disposing of samples and specimens.
- Maintaining the inventory of laboratory equipment.
- Carrying out experimental work.
- Undertaking analytical work.
- Maintaining and preserving specimens and cultures.
- Recording of experimental data.
- Setting up and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Maintaining comprehensive laboratory records.
- Carrying out demonstrations of laboratory functions to clients/visitors.
Person Specification and Qualifications
For appointment to this grade a candidate must have:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following disciplines: Applied Biology, Food technology, Analytical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum overall grade of C+ (C Plus) or equivalent.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
