The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) is seeking qualified candidates for the temporary position of Information Science (2 Posts). The primary purpose of this role is to provide professional library and information services, assist in system development, manage library projects, and coordinate support staff activities, ensuring high standards of quality and service delivery in aquatic research information management.
Job Specification
The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail assisting in the following areas:
- Provide professional library and information services.
- Assist in the development of library and information services and systems.
- Coordinate with other library teams on library and information management projects.
- Be responsible for the quality as well as quantity of output and service.
- Be responsible for providing training to the support staff.
- Arrange necessary materials and resources for task completion.
- Prepare periodical performance reports of support staff.
- Motivate support staff and supervise jobs and tasks assigned to the team members.
- Guide and instruct support staff in the team for day-to-day activities.
- Teaching users how to use online resources (e.g., e-books, e-journals).
- Identifying library technologies and overseeing their implementation.
- Developing websites and undertaking digitizing/converting content.
- Providing technical support, system administration/maintenance, data conversion, data migration, system analysis and testing.
- Managing open-source software development, usability testing, interoperability, and digital library technology initiatives.
- Providing reference services to all library users to satisfy their specific information needs.
- Performing cataloguing, bibliographic descriptions, metadata indexing.
- Ensuring adherence to technical and quality standards.
Person Specification
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
- Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Library Studies, Information Science, or other relevant and equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution.
- Minimum KCSE grade C+ (plus) or its equivalent.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
