This temporary position, identified as EXT/KMF/TEMP/15, is for a First Mate (Desk Officer) who will play a crucial operational role in managing the vessels used by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI).
Job Specifications (Duties and Responsibilities)
The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail:
- Keeping watch of the vessel when afloat.
- Coordinating the loading of all kinds of cargo.
- Serving as the custodian of all official documents regarding the vessel.
- Handling all navigation matters.
- Being in charge of all assistant marine captains.
- Coordinating vessel sea trips by mobilizing the engineer for vessel servicing, fueling, ensuring cleanliness, and general maintenance of the vessel.
- Participating in the planning of research activities by providing expert advice on maritime affairs.
Person Specifications (Qualifications and Experience)
For appointment to the position of a First Mate, a candidate must have:
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a mean grade C (Plain) or its equivalent.
- Diploma in Navigation or an equivalent qualification.
- Certificates of competency in Class 1 Coasting/ Class 1 Inland Waters/ unlimited or equivalent.
- Served at the grade of a second mate or its equivalent for at least three (3) years.
- Completion of a Supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks.
- Recency: 90 days sea time in the past three (3) years on vessels of appropriate tonnage as a second mate.
