Role Overview
The Emergency Medical Technician III at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) is responsible for responding to emergencies, providing crucial pre-hospital care, coordinating ambulance services, ensuring the safe transport of patients, and monitoring patient outcomes during transit.
Job Purpose
To respond to emergencies, provide pre-hospital care, coordinate ambulance services, and ensure safe patient transport while monitoring outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Accident & Emergency, the position holder will be responsible for the following:
- Coordinating emergency calls efficiently and making critical decisions to ensure timely lifesaving interventions.
- Providing basic life support and collecting vital patient data.
- Assessing patients and determining their emergency medical care requirements.
- Delivering emergency care using appropriate techniques and medical equipment.
- Maintaining effective two-way communication through radio and telephone, with strong verbal command.
- Allocating ambulance personnel and vehicles appropriately to respond to emergency calls and scheduled events.
- Planning the strategic placement of ambulances for optimal response times.
- Transporting patients according to established protocols and procedures.
- Planning and implementing patient care interventions during transport.
- Administering authorized medication to improve patient outcomes.
- Monitoring healthcare outcomes during transit and preparing individualized reports.
- Documenting patient care activities while in transit.
- Ensuring accurate data entry for patient tracking and data analysis.
- Responding to distress calls with pre-hospital instructions and emotional reassurance to callers.
- Collecting vital caller information and relaying it to ambulance crews for adequate preparation.
- Any other duty as may be assigned.
Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements
Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician course or equivalent qualification from a recognized training institution.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
- Valid First Aid certificate from a recognized training institution.
- Certification by the Kenya Council of Emergency Medical Technicians.
- Valid Emergency Medical Technician license from the Kenya Council of Emergency Medical Technicians.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
