Digital Journalist, BBC Swahili

This role is for an experienced journalist to create engaging digital content, including video, primarily in Swahili and occasionally in English. The journalist will work under Senior Digital Journalists, and the Assistant Editor and Editor of the BBC Swahili Service, collaborating with a team based in Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and the surrounding region.

Core Purpose: The digital journalist will produce high-quality news and features in text and video formats, ensuring content is optimized for various digital and social platforms while adhering strictly to BBC values and editorial standards.

Key Responsibilities and Impact:

• Report, present, research, write, translate, edit, and adapt text stories, video, or audio material for digital platforms and radio audiences.
• Create original digital content across all multimedia outputs.
• Address editorial challenges proactively by developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.
• Maintain professional journalistic standards regarding accuracy, impartiality, and fair dealing, strictly adhering to the BBC’s Editorial guidelines.
• Contribute ideas for programme content, suggest new angles on existing stories, and propose stories not yet covered.
• Manage developing stories, continuously amending and updating material as required, and writing engaging headlines.
• Provide content for other BBC areas, including BBC Africa and the wider BBC News service.

Required Experience and Skills Overview: Candidates should have proven experience in delivering compelling content across multiple digital platforms in a challenging environment. Essential attributes include knowledge of the East Africa region, relevant contacts, strong journalistic skills across digital platforms, familiarity with the digital media market, creativity, flexibility, and a deep commitment to explaining world events to global audiences.
