Coffee Extension Training Program - Bomet

This opportunity is a sponsored training program offered by New KPCU PLC, aimed at developing Coffee Extension Champions to provide essential services to coffee farmers in Bomet County. Successful trainees will gain a foundation for establishing a self-employment career post-training.

This role involves Sponsored Training with a clear path to Self-Employment Opportunity Post-Training.

Training Details

• Venue: Coffee Research Institute and designated County Training Centers.
• Duration: One week of intensive theory and practical training.
• Certification: A Certificate of Completion will be issued jointly by New KPCU and the Coffee Research Institute.
• Cost: The training is fully sponsored by New KPCU. Trainees are responsible for catering for their own transport.

Roles After Training (Extension Champion Responsibilities)

Upon successful completion of the training, Extension Champions will be expected to:

• Provide private extension services to farmers within their respective wards.
• Train farmers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to significantly boost yields.
• Support the rehabilitation efforts of abandoned or underperforming coffee farms.
• Promote the adoption of quality planting materials supplied through the program.
• Mobilize and organize local farmers into recognized cooperatives or farmer groups.
• Assist farmers with crucial basic farm management tasks, including record-keeping and crop monitoring.

Earning Model for Services

Extension Champions will establish a reasonable service fee structure, agreed upon at the ward level through cooperatives or farmer groups and formally approved by the Standing County Technical Committee. Champions are required to work closely with cooperatives to ensure transparent and accountable collection of service fees, typically facilitated through cooperative deductions or mobile money payments. Champions are strongly encouraged to enter into formal service agreements with the cooperatives or farmer groups they serve.

Eligibility Requirements

Applications must meet the following criteria:

• Hold a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Horticulture, Agriculture Economics, or any related field.
• Be bona fide residents of the specific ward they intend to serve (proof of residency is mandatory).
• Demonstrate a strong passion for transforming rural livelihoods through the implementation of sustainable coffee farming practices.
• Possess effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Must not have previously participated in or been trained under this specific program.

Candidates with the following attributes will have an added advantage:

• Previous experience related to coffee farming, cooperatives, or agricultural extension work.
• Familiarity and proficiency with digital tools used for data collection.
• Demonstrable knowledge of coffee agronomy and essential post-harvest techniques.
