This senior role requires taking full responsibility for the Profit & Loss (P&L) of a specific business vertical, leading it from both an operational and financial perspective, and ensuring strategic targets are met or exceeded. The Business Unit Manager will champion growth, efficiency, and lead team development.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for the business vertical Profit & Loss (P&L).
- Achieve or exceed budgeted targets for revenue, EBITDA, and profit.
- Lead the business vertical from an operational and financial perspective.
- Prepare accurate and timely reports for senior management and the Board of Directors.
- Prepare and present the Quarterly Business Review (QBR) to the Board of Directors.
- Demonstrate successful relationship-building with senior management within the organization to ensure alignment of company objectives and effective cross-functional processes.
- Demonstrate sales/revenue growth success.
- Champion and initiate continuous improvement on sales processes, cost control, and quality control.
- Ensure company policies and procedures are understood and consistently followed by all team members.
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team, delegating tasks and authority as appropriate.
- Manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and reporting on daily performance.
- Foster an environment of open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect.
- Determine performance drivers and direct accountability for that performance.
- Create an energizing work environment that supports the company’s high performance culture.
- Develop and implement effective problem resolution processes.
- Develop new concepts that meet customer needs or changing existing offerings to meet changing market conditions.
- Conduct market research studies to identify potential new customers or new uses for existing products or services.
- Monitoring industry trends and competitor activities to identify areas where additional research or development is needed to maintain competitiveness.
- Analyse data and financial reports to inform decision-making.
- Represent the company at industry events and conferences.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Management, or related field (MBA/MSc/MA).
- 10+ years of progressive commercial experience, including at least 5 years in senior management.
- Proven experience managing a business unit with full P and L responsibility.
- Practical experience in FinTech, digital banking, mobile payments, or financial inclusion.
- Experience in cross-border East African markets (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia preferred).
- Demonstrated success in revenue growth, business development, and building high-performing teams.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
