This role is for an Assistant Research Scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). The officer will be responsible for assisting in various stages of the research process related to aquatic systems, encompassing both marine and freshwater environments.
Job Specifications (Duties and Responsibilities)
The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail assisting in:
- Identifying research problems in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Prioritizing research problems for effective implementation.
- Developing research concepts.
- Identifying relevant literature material for research.
- Collecting of data in the field.
- Performing data analysis.
- Writing appropriate technical reports, including research notes, technical notes, conference posters, and dissemination flyers.
- Organizing and implementing dissemination activities, such as Open days and ASK shows.
- Disseminating research findings in local fora, including seminars, workshops, and congresses.
- Mentoring students on attachment, interns, and visitors (including High School and Colleges).
- Implementing relevant ISO standards within their departments.
- Compiling departmental quarterly and annual reports.
Person Specification (Qualifications and Experience)
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
- A Bachelor’s Honors degree or equivalent degree in any of the following fields: Aquatic or Fisheries Sciences, Biological or Physical Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, Geology, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, Bio-statistics, Marine Engineering, Biometrics, Biotechnology, or any other aquatic, fisheries and other relevant disciplines from a recognized University.
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ (Plus) or equivalent.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
