To provide technical leadership, training, mentorship, and backstopping to facilitators of FFS (Farmer Field Schools) and FBS (Farmer Business Schools), ensuring that both methodologies are implemented effectively, sustainably, and in line with project goals.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Assist in contextualizing FFS and FBS curricula, training modules, and facilitation guides to local agro‑ecological and market conditions.
Co‑facilitate Training of Trainers (ToT) for FFS/FBS facilitators and GOK (Government of Kenya) extension officers.
Provide hands-on coaching to facilitators during FFS and FBS cycles, reinforcing adherence to participatory learning methods and FFS learning principles.
Conduct routine supervision visits to farmer groups to assess facilitator performance and provide on-site guidance on FFS season-long learning.
Offer technical assistance on agronomy, climate-smart agriculture, group dynamics, participatory experimentation, and business development skills in the preferred FFS group value chains.
Ensure facilitators apply approved methodologies and adhere to FFS/FBS principles.
Support facilitators in collecting data, maintaining attendance records, and documenting key observations.
Guide facilitators in documenting innovations, field trials, enterprise performance, and behavioural change among farmers.
Compile field reports, case studies, and success stories for dissemination at project and stakeholder forums.
Participate in FFS review meetings and learning events to share lessons learnt.
Guide facilitators in documenting innovations, field trials, enterprise performance, and changes in trends among farmers.
Support and facilitate linkages between FFS/FBS groups and service providers (input suppliers, market actors, financial institutions).
Support in supervising the LOA (Letter of Agreement) service providers in the assigned counties.
Support in organising and coordinating FFS learning events and field days at all levels.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: University degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, or a related field.
Experience: Five (5) years of relevant experience in agricultural extension, participatory training, and farmer business capacity development.
Languages: Working knowledge (level C) of English and Kiswahili.
Nationality: National of Kenya.
Technical and Functional Skills
Certification or proven experience as an FFS and/or FBS Trainer.
Extent and relevance of experience in integrating cross-cutting themes (gender, youth, climate resilience, nutrition).
Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
Strong facilitation and participatory training skills.
Familiarity with monitoring, evaluation, and reporting in agricultural/agribusiness projects.
