The role of the Assistant Librarian involves providing a comprehensive range of technical and clerical services essential for the efficient operation of the library. The main objective is to provide information and reference services, reader’s advisory, cataloguing, circulation services, administrative support, and ensure the security of library resources and patrons.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Creating and updating information resources, encompassing both electronic and printed formats.
- Assisting researchers by conducting literature searches utilizing databases, printed resources, and the internet.
- Managing various resources such as books, journals, website information, and responding to users’ enquiries.
- Handling the circulation of library resources to authorized users and maintaining accurate circulation files, records, and statistics.
- Delivering information and learning skills courses tailored for students and staff.
- Managing library data and reports through the utilization of library software systems.
- Training and supervising library interns and attachées in their designated job duties.
- Assisting in the collection, cataloguing, preparation, and organization of library materials in strict adherence to library policies.
- Conducting library promotional activities and preparing promotional materials such as newsletters to enhance customer engagement.
- Organizing events such as book talks, tours, multimedia programs, exhibits, and displays.
- Participating actively in stocktaking and inventory control, and contributing to the long-term strategic plans of the library.
- Inspecting and adjusting security systems, equipment, and machinery to ensure operational readiness and detect any evidence of tampering.
- Performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Higher Diploma/Diploma in Library and Information Science or a related field from a recognized/accredited institution.
- At least 3 years’ relevant library experience, preferably obtained in an academic or institutional library setting.
- Proven experience working with library management systems (LMS) and electronic resources.

- Proficiency in ICT skills, including experience with databases and digital libraries.
