The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The Urban Economy Branch of UN-Habitat works to enhance local capabilities.
The role of the Analyst for the Nation Statistics Office involves contributing significantly to the preparation of thematic reports. This position requires strong data analysis, research, and technical writing skills focusing on population and demographic issues, collaborating closely with the National Statistics Office (NSO), the Lead Analyst, and sectoral experts.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be responsible for tasks related to the production of the thematic report, including:
- Inception Report Outline: Develop the outline of the thematic report following the writing format/guidelines provided by NSO/UN-Habitat and explained at the orientation workshop. This includes content-based headings, sub-headings, tables, graphs, maps, and annexes.
- Data Preparation and Acquisition: Prepare and submit dummy tables (trends and patterns) in the report outline and in Excel format to NSO/UN-Habitat to obtain the necessary census data from the NSO.
- Data Analysis Summary: Summarize and analyze other relevant data (Nepal and International) that will be integrated into the report.
- Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive review of literature, including theoretical frameworks, empirical studies, and periodic plans and policies, related to the thematic report topic.
- Coordination and Collaboration: Mobilize and work together with the Lead Analyst and experts for the overall exercise of thematic report preparation, maintaining consultation with the Ministry of Water Supply (MoWS) as needed.
- Workshop Participation: Participate in the first writing workshop organized by NSO/UN-Habitat and present the progress made.
- Draft Submission: Prepare and submit the complete first draft thematic report by the third week of April 2026 to NSO/UN-Habitat.
- Revision: Incorporate reviewers’ comments into the final thematic report.
Qualifications and Special Skills
Education:
- An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in Applied Statistics, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Studies, or relevant Social Science disciplines in a related field is required.
- A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Experience:
- A minimum of two (2) years of qualifying experience in data analysis, research, and writing on population and demographic issues is required.
- Working experience with official statistics producing agencies is required.
- Prior involvement in preparing thematic reports is desirable.
- Experience in analyzing cross-cutting themes like GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) and Poverty using major national data is desirable.
- Previous experience working with the United Nations is desirable.
